Cosmopolitan Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays. If you have never been before then perhaps plan to spend a couple of days before your charter exploring the little town and its outskirts.
As charter boats cannot visit the outer reef, perhaps book a tour out to see the Great Barrier Reef. More information can be found here.
You can also hire a car and take a drive out to Hideaway Bay or Dingo Beach, both about a 40 minute drive from Airlie Beach. Enjoy beautiful local food and friendly hospitality right on the beach at Montes in picturesque Hideaway Bay.
Take the kids for a refreshing swim in the man made lagoon or browse the Saturday markets along the foreshore.
There are two bases in Airlie Beach. The first one is Abel Point Marina. This base is quite convenient as it is close to the shops for you to do all of your provisioning. The Whitsunday Shopping Centre is about a 3 minute drive from the marina and has a Coles supermarket, butchers, seafood shop, bottleshop and local fruit & vegetable supplier.
The second base in Airlie Beach is Shute Harbour. The advantage of this base is it is closer to the islands so you reach your first overnight quicker on the first day and don’t have as far to sail back on your last day. This is quite convenient if you are planning a shorter charter such as 5 nights.
