Whether you are an avid fisherman or are just looking to throw a line in and try your luck, there are plenty of different types of fish to catch in the Whitsundays.

These include blue & black marlin, bass and bream, sailfish, 6 species of mackerel, 7 species of coral trout, 11 species of trevally, 4 species of emperor, queenfish, barramundi, mangrove jack, 7 species of cod and 5 species of tuna!

You do not require a permit to fish in the Whitsundays, however you do need to be aware of the different zones. If you are planning to fish on your catamaran holiday, please study the zoning map prior to your charter as there are strict zoning rules the apply in the area. You can download a copy here

Fishing is prohibited in Marine National Park zones (green areas). 

Please also research the closed season dates. Closed seasons prevent people from fishing for coral reef fin fish at certain times of the year to protect species during spawning seasons. The following dates have been implemented as closed seasons.

  • 19 November 2014 to 23 November 2014
  • 10 October 2015 to 14 October 2015
  • 9 November 2015 to 13 November 2015
  • 28 October 2016 to 1 November 2016
  • 26 November 2016 to 30 November 2016
